It's a well known fact that Pet Stores selling 'purebred' pets are getting their stock from puppy mills, willingly or ignorantly. So why do so many people support this horrible act of animal cruelty and buy these pets?
Fact of the matter is, no reputable breeder is going to let their puppies or kittens be sold in a pet store. And yet, so many people are fooled into thinking that they are getting a good, well bred pet. Do emotions in the moment completely trump sense and logic when they see that tiny furry face? Or is it the fear of what will happen to that pet if it does not get a home?
If you are looking to get a good purebred pet, you need to do your homework. They aren't going to be the cheapest one and they aren't going to be the easiest one to acquire either. A good breeder would never sell their babies to the first person who comes along. Talk to your vet, go to pet shows, ask questions! Here is a great checklist I found from the Humane Society that will help you find what you are looking for: Click Here
If getting a purebred is not a necessity to you, then consider going to your local humane society. These shelters are often over taken by unwanted pets who need good caring homes. The staff can help you find the perfect pet who will suit your needs and lifestyle. Don't know where your local humane society is? Locate yours here (Canada) (USA).
There are so many options to consider and decisions to be made when acquiring a pet. It should never be a spur of the moment decision (that is how so many pets end up in shelters).
As for me, I have only just slowly begun researching for the perfect cats which I hope to adopt in a few years.
Until next time,
Mel,RVT
